Olive Oil for Hair

While olive oil is already widely being used as an addition in skin lotions and soaps, it also can be applied in its pure form. Estheticians promote its use as ‘special’ treatments. They do, however, stress that it only be used in its purest form, i.e. extra virgin, cold pressed, contains no additives and be purchased in small quantities in order to retain its beneficial properties. Bottles should be closed tightly, stored at room temperature and away from sunlight and humidity.

Hair, being consistently exposed to all manner of element, benefits greatly from olive oil treatments. Summer or winter, scalps need ‘pampering’, drying out very quickly. Again the best overall treatment is overnight. Remember, massaging oil into the scalp also treats your hair from the root to the ends and results in a flat hairdo. Hence the overnight treatment suggestion. Again, thoroughly clean your hair, towel it dry and apply olive oil (the oil should be slightly warmed and comfortable to the touch).

If you only wish to treat hair ends, rub Olive Oil over the inside of your hands, then take strands of hair and roll the ends between your palms. Again, ensure that the oil is slightly warmed for maximum benefit.

Why is olive oil so good and yet so healthy at the same time?

We're used to having to choose between the two. For example, when we're presented with food that tastes like cardboard but we're told is full of organic, unsweetened fiber. ;-)

Well, olive oil is mostly composed of mono unsaturated fatty acids. These acids can help lower the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. They can also help normalize blood clotting and be beneficial to blood sugar control (re: diabetes). Olive oil is rich as well in antioxidants and in vitamin E, which are believed to play a role in cancer prevention.

So, enjoy olive oil in its many uses, mainly culinary ... and remember that the secret is to add olive oil to other quality ingredients (e.g. tomatoes, feta, arugula, bocconcini, etc) to end up with absolutely delicious and healthy food!
